The Aviary
Spring 2006
-
The aviary today.
-
Construction begins!
The aviary was the first structure we added to the property. It made the most sense to attach it to the existing barn for easy access to electric and water.
-
These pigeons will have a great view.
-
Framing the base.
-
Pete and his son hard at work.
We feel so fortunate to have found our builder, Pete. He had some really great ideas and is a true artist who created what is still my favorite structure on the farm.
-
Lots of crusher run delivered.
Several tons of material had to be hand carried to the site with a wheelbarrow due to location. Pete was truly amazing!

Coming along.

The perfect roofline.

Interior.
The door on top was designed to close in case we wanted to enclose everyone inside the insulated coop area.
-
Insulating the walls.
-
Insulation & Panelling
I used recycled denim insulation inside the walls.
-
Cutting the vinyl coated mesh.
Pete and Rich cutting the thick mesh with a grinder.
-
Insulated coop area.
Pete placed gorgeous local slate tiles on the coop floor.
-
Ready for the birds!
-
Mitch, Eartha & Appaloosa move in.
There were no plants or decorations, yet, but they loved being outside in their new home.
-
A favorite roosting spot.
-
Lots of fun stuff for everyone.
We made sure our flighted and nonflighted pigeons had plenty of enrichment. They have a heated bath, sand areas, herbs and flowers. There are two large trees in the aviary now that offer lots of hiding and perching areas.

-
Spring makeover.
Each Spring, we plant new junipers if needed, and spruce up the natural floor.
-
Chicken garden bench.
The aviary creates one of the walls for the chicken garden. You can see the netting above to keep hawks out.
